'The material may be more flexible, but it allowed it us to a bunch of different things,' Jertson said. 'You'll notice a higher launch that carries a bit more and is more forgiving overall.'
According to PING, the new face is 28 percent thinner and produces 30 percent more face flex at impact. The lighter face yielded an additional 6 grams of weight savings that was used to create a high-density back weight in the sole. The weight plays an important part in improving MOI by 5 percent and boosting ball speeds by 2 mph. When combined, the G400 fairway wood carries an extra 7 yards when compared to the previous G version.
As opposed to sticking with the standard fairway models that have been offered in the past, PING decided to increase the options in the G400 lineup by adding a 9-wood, as well as a draw-biased 22-degree SFT version.
The G400 Stretch 3-wood returns in a slightly larger overall head shape — 193cc vs. 184cc — for players who primarily use a fairway wood off the tee. The club only comes in one loft (13 degrees) and has a CG weight that was repositioned towards the back of the head — as opposed to the more central weight location in the G Stretch 3-wood.
The G400 fairway woods ($287.50) are available in eight lofts and three head options: standard (14.5, 17, 20.5 and 23.5 degrees); a draw-biased SFT (16, 19 and 22 degrees); and the 13-degree Stretch 3 model.
